Capacity Reservation

I noticed an option name Capacity Reservation when I wanna to launch a new ec2 instance.
The default value is OPEN, what is this option mean?

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/en_us/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/troubleshooting-launch.html

Capacity Reservation requests are granted or denied based on your EC2 instance limits and our available capacity.
When you create a Capacity Reservation, we reserve the specified capacity for your use.
The reserved capacity is charged at the selected instance type’s On-Demand rate whether an instance is running in it or not.
You can also use your regional reserved instances with your Capacity Reservations to benefit from billing discounts.

Open -> the default, the instance will be automatically matched with a capacity reservation of the same type, if you have no capacity reservations at all then this option will be same as none and you can ignore it.

None -> the instance will not be counted against a capacity reservation even if you have a matching one.

Eligible capacity reservation id(s) -> You will see one or more capacity reservations if you have already created matching ones
None
Eligible capacity reservation id(s)

Hello

Thanks for contacting AWS support, my name is Asem and I will be assisting you today.

You seem to have stumbled upon a newly added feature that was just released :)

As you may have already known by now, the capacity of an instance type in an availability zone is finite, and if you request an instance type that we have no capacity for you will get "Insufficient Capacity Error"
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/troubleshooting-launch.html#troubleshooting-launch-capacity

The new Capacity reservation feature is our attempt to remedy this problem by allowing customers to receive a number of instances of certain type and platform in a specific availability zone.

You can read more about this feature here.
https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/faqs/#capacityreservations

Using this link https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2sp/v1/lr/home, you can create multiple capacity reservations and when you launch an instance you can select which capacity reservation will the instance belong to.

The possible options are

Open -> the default, the instance will be automatically matched with a capacity reservation of the same type, if you have no capacity reservations at all then this option will be same as none and you can ignore it.

None -> the instance will not be counted against a capacity reservation even if you have a matching one.

Eligible capacity reservation id(s) -> You will see one or more capacity reservations if you have already created matching ones

Hopefully, I have provided you with useful information, if you feel the need to follow up with any additional questions or concerns please let me know.

Best regards,

Asem M.
